Case Study:

Calow Parish Council

  • Installation Date: October 2023
  • Project Type: Safety Surfacing

Project Brief

A number of years ago Calow Parish Council installed a new play area at their Eastwood Park site.  The playground equipment manufacturer who installed the initial project laid a Bonded Rubber Mulch safety surface without a sub-base in order to release budget for more equipment.  However, the lack of sub base was now causing mud to seep through the bonded rubber mulch surfacing causing sinking and huge muddy puddles.

This is a common problem in the play industry as the focus tends to fall on play equipment and fails to recognise the importance of the correct specification when it comes to safety surfacing. When considering installations in areas which are known to be wet and susceptible to water logging, it is key to appraise the most appropriate specification for safety surfacing.

Project Outcome

Team Sport & Play had worked with the Parish Council previously to install a rubber/stone mix pathway with a stone sub base through the play area along with wetpour wear pads.  The Parish Council approached us to ask our advise with the sub-base issue they were experiencing in order to find the most cost effective way of solving the problem.

The most effective solution was to remove the contaminated bonded rubber mulch and import a no-fines porous concrete sub-base.  This would provide a solid and stable substrate that will not deteriorate in standing water.  The sub-base was then overlaid with new bonded rubber mulch.

The finished area looks fantastic, not only is it now stable and clear of mud but it has given the play area a completely new feel.

“Team Sport & Play came to our rescue by re-surfacing the water-logged areas in the toddler play.  This not only blends into the existing surface but also enhances the look and use of the play area. They did an excellent job and I would highly recommend their work.”
