Case Study:

Middleton on the Wolds

  • Installation Date: July 2021
  • Project Type: Play Area Refurbmishment

Project Brief

Following a recent Rospa Inspection, the local Parish Council were looking at options to resolve safety issues that they were experiencing relating to rotten timber equipment on their site.  The existing timber equipment was installed in the 1980s and was looking extremely tired and at the end of its functional life.  The rubber tile surfacing was in a bad way, lifting and showing signs of wear and tear due to heavy use over the years. The Parish Council were keen to maintain a natural aesthetic on the green space without being exposed to on-going future maintenance costs, as can often be the case with timber products.

Team Sport & Play had installed a toddler play area two years previous at another site within the village and were contacted by the Parish Council to ask our professional opinion on this second, larger site.

Project Outcome

Team Sport & Play created a moodboard of potential ideas which was used at a consultation event within the local community to gain support and begin to start fundraising for the new play area.

The Parish Council were clear in their brief that the equipment needed to be inclusive, heavy duty and durable whilst still having a natural feel.  Team Sport & Play suggested using galvanised steel which would be powder coated and painted in natural colours such as browns and greens to fit in to the natural surroundings of the area.  The safety surfacing would mainly be green play carpet which is low maintenance, durable and long lasting.

The location of the play area is situated on the same field as the local Cricket Club.  Team Sport & Play worked closely with the them to ensure the boundaries would not be affected by the new play area.

The completed park was opened with an official ceremony in July 2021 and boasts a range of equipment for all ages including a Zip Wire, 5-Arm Rotator, Multiplay Unit, Nest Swing, Roundabout, Springer and Double Bay Swings.  The local children were delighted with their new play area and due to its location, it is now a wonderful location to meet up with other families and friends.
